DOMER DICTIONARY

We have put together a dictionary of common phrases and words that will make your transition to campus much easier. Check them out and get acquainted with the many weird (but useful) names we use on campus!

ABP

Au Bon Pain; a cafe located on the first floor of the Hesburgh Library as well as ABP express in the Hesburgh Center for International Studies (across from DeBartolo)

AnTostal

annual spring festival put on by the Student Union Board (SUB) which celebrates the final full week of classes
 
lots of free food, t-shirts, games, and other fun events

BP

Breen-Phillips Hall

Canvas

a website that many professors use to post assignments, resources, grades, etc.​

C.S.C.

indicative of being a member of the Holy Cross Religious Order (don’t confuse it with the CSC)

Discussion

a small class that is part of a larger lecture that is run by TAs, usually on Fridays

DPAC

DeBartolo Performing Arts Center; many campus productions go on here as well as many of the Film, Television, and Theatre Classes

East Quad

area home to Dunne Hall, Flaherty Hall, and Johnson Family Hall

Fieldhouse Mall

area between Cavanaugh Hall, Stonehenge Fountain, and LaFortune Student center
 
many outdoor events and giveaways happen in this area

God Quad

area in the center of campus that is the home of the Main Building (the Dome!), the Basilica, Sorin College, Walsh Hall, Washington Hall, LaFortune Student Center, and the statues of Jesus and Father Sorin

Huddle

the Huddle Mart convenience store in LaFortune, where students can buy food, drinks, toiletries, notebooks, and other essential items

JACC

Joyce Athletic and Convocation Center; houses many campus events like basketball, volleyball, fencing, pep rallies, and more (often called "The Jack")

Legends

programming venue near the stadium, which often has live entertainment events

Main Circle

pick-up and drop-off location at the main campus entrance on Notre Dame Ave
 
located between the Law School and Alumni Hall, in front of the Main Building

Mod Quad

area with Knott Hall, Siegfried Hall, Pasquerilla East, Pasquerilla West, and Flanner & Grace Halls

NDH ("North")

North Dining Hall

North Quad

area that houses Breen-Phillips Hall, Farley Hall, Lewis Hall, St. Edward’s Hall, Stanford Hall, Keenan Hall, Zahm Hall (RIP), and Cavanaugh Hall

OIT

Office of Information Technologies; the central agency responsible for computer and technology services on campus

PE

Pasquerilla East, a women’s dorm on Mod Quad

Rector

the person in charge of each dorm who lives in the dorm (the responsible adult you should call)

The Shirt

a shirt that is student-designed that everyone wears at one football game
 
can be bought at the bookstore

SDH "South"

South Dining Hall

SYR

Set Up Your Roommate (or the better name - Screw Your Roommate) Dance is an informal, themed dance that each dorm has

Tailgate

pre-football game festivities that occur in the parking lots by the stadium

ACE

Alliance for Catholic Education; a program through ND that trains graduating students to teach children in elementary & secondary schools and strives to sustain, strengthen, and transform Catholic schools

Appalachia

service trip for students that takes place over either fall or spring break

Bond Quad

grassy area that is in front of Bond Hall and behind Coleman-Morse Center and Badin Hall

CoMo

Coleman-Morse Center; a building on South Quad that houses the Offices of Campus Ministry, Offices for the First Year of Studies Program, and Academic Service for Student Athletes
 
there is a huge lounge with fireplaces and TVs, and lots of study space

DeBart

Debartolo Hall; large classroom building where most first year classes and gen-ed lectures will be held (pronounced "D-Bart")

Domer

an ND student or alum

duLac

the student handbook that outlines the many rules and regulations at ND

Eduroam

campus Wi-fi... must be connected to it in order to print things

Fish Bowl

open study area on the first floor of Hes that is usually used for group studying

Grab ‘n’ Go

when classes are in session, you can swipe into the Grab ‘n’ Go at both dining halls if you do not have time to sit down and eat a meal
 
you can pick from a variety of fruit, sandwiches, and other snacks

ID Card

card that you use to get into your dorm, instead of a key
 
one of the few things that every Notre Dame student has with them at all times, as it allows them access to dorms, gets them into the dining hall, and contains their flex points

JPW

Junior Parents Weekend; a weekend in the spring when parents of Juniors come to visit and participate in events on campus (pronounced "Jay P Dub")

Library Circle

a spot on the east side of Hes where cars can pick-up and drop-off students

Mendoza

a student in the Mendoza School of Business

NDPD

Notre Dame Police Department

NDID

9-digit student ID number, typically begins with 90

NOVO

stands for “New Organization Via Online registration”
 
use this to register for next semester’s courses

O'Shag

O’Shaughnessy Hall, which houses many Arts and Letters classes, departmental offices, and Waddick’s Cafe

PW

Pasquerilla West, a women’s dorm on Mod Quad (pronounced "P Dub")

The Rock

Rockne Memorial Gym, which is right next to Lyons on South Quad

SMC/Smicks/Belles

Saint Mary’s College, the all-girls school located adjacent to Notre Dame
 
most girls from this school are called either Smicks or Belles

South Quad

the large outdoor space that ranges from the Rock to O’Shag

TA

Teaching Assistant; many large lecture classes (gen-eds) will have TAs who assist the professor with grading and hold office hours

Touchdown Jesus

aka Word of Life, the mosaic on the side of the library that faces the stadium

Acousticafé

event every Thursday night where students can display their musical talents by singing and playing instruments

Archie

student in the Architecture program (pronounced "Arkie")

Bookstore Basketball

largest 5-on-5 basketball tournament in the world
 
roughly more than 500 teams compete every year

CSC

Center for Social Concerns; if you are interested in service projects or volunteer opportunities, the CSC is the place to go

DH

typical abbreviation for “dining hall”

Domer Dollars

money that can be loaded onto your ID card to use at places on campus or a few places off campus

Duncan

Duncan Student Center; large building attached to the stadium that has restaurants, study spaces, the Career Center, the Smith Recreational Center, and various other groups and organizations

Fall Break

a whole week off of school during mid-October
 
you can go home, go on a service trip, or road trip with your friends as a reward for all of the hard work in the semester

Flex Points

money given to you by the University that accompanies a meal plan
 
can be used at the restaurants on campus or the Huddle Mart
 
all you need to do is use your ID card and the money will come out of your account

The Grotto

replica of the Grotto of Lourdes in France, where students can light candles and spend time in reflection and prayer

InsideND

website that has everything you might need... grades, class updates, registration, and other super important information

LaFun

LaFortune Student Center; the building with the Huddle, various restaurants, a hair salon, FedEx, First Source Bank, ND Federal Credit Union, and lots of study space

Main Building

The Dome!
 
this building is the most recognizable feature of Notre Dame’s campus because of the statue of Mary on the Dome
 
houses Administration, Housing, Student Affairs, and other offices

Michiana

the region along the border of Michigan and Indiana (where South Bend is)

NDTV

student-run TV station

netID

your computer ID name that gives you access to the ND network from almost every computer on campus (ex. calbert3, ospraul, mmehigan)

Observer

campus newspaper that publishes student work

Parietals

the University’s policies on having the opposite sex in the dorm
 
from 12am-9am on Sunday through Thursday and 2am-9am on Friday and Saturday, the opposite sex is only allowed in 24-hour spaces

RecSports

intramural sports program

Rolfs

athletic facility that is open to all students, it is next to Jordan Hall of Science

Stonehenge

aka Clark Memorial Fountain, a war memorial located on North Quad, near LaFun

SUB

Student Union Board; organizes events and activities for students like Acousticafé and more

Tutorial

like a discussion session, but more to work through problems (for classes like calculus and chemistry)

West Quad

area home to Welsh Family Hall, Keough Hall, O’Neil Hall, McGlinn Hall, Duncan Hall, Ryan Hall, and Baumer Hall
